In a culture obsessed with eating less, a huge portion of people \u2014 especially active ones \u2014 are chronically under-eating.<\/p>\n<p>When you don&#8217;t consume enough total calories, your body starts rationing energy. It slows down non-essential functions, reduces your drive to move, and makes everything feel harder than it should. Your brain gets foggy. Your workouts feel heavy. Your mood tanks.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been in a caloric deficit for an extended period and you&#8217;re exhausted, that&#8217;s not weakness \u2014 that&#8217;s your body sending you a very clear signal. If you went through our nutrition series over the last few weeks, revisit your calorie target and make sure you&#8217;re actually hitting it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Your Blood Sugar Is on a Rollercoaster<\/h2>\n<p>Ever eat a big sugary breakfast and feel great for an hour \u2014 then crash hard by 10am? You need something. Don&#8217;t skip it and expect to feel good.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>You&#8217;re Under-Eating Protein<\/h2>\n<p>Protein isn&#8217;t just for building muscle. It plays a direct role in your energy levels. Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protein helps regulate blood sugar \u2014 meals with adequate protein produce a slower, more stable energy curve.<\/li>\n<li>Amino acids from protein are precursors to neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin \u2014 the chemicals that drive motivation, mood, and focus.<\/li>\n<li>Without enough protein, your body has a harder time repairing tissue after training \u2014 meaning you carry more fatigue from session to session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re hitting the gym regularly and not eating 0.7\u20131g of protein per pound of bodyweight, this is likely a major piece of your energy puzzle. And most people walk around mildly dehydrated every single day without realizing it.<\/p>\n<p>Thirst is a late signal. By the time you feel thirsty, you&#8217;re already behind. And coffee \u2014 while it has its place \u2014 is a diuretic that can make dehydration worse if it&#8217;s not paired with enough water.<\/p>\n<p>A simple starting target: half your bodyweight in ounces of water per day. If you weigh 160lbs, that&#8217;s 80oz of water. Add more on training days.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Your Meals Are Too Far Apart<\/h2>\n<p>Going 6, 7, or 8 hours between meals without eating sends your blood sugar on a long slow decline \u2014 and you feel it as fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. You don&#8217;t need to eat every two hours (we busted that myth in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitness1440.com\/fredericksburgva\/stop-believing-these-myths\/\">Part 3<\/a>), but going too long between meals without any fuel is its own problem.<\/p>\n<p>Aim to eat something meaningful every 3\u20135 hours.
