Ozempic, GLP-1s, and the Fitness Conversation Around Them

by | Aug 27, 2026 | Community, Uncategorized

Note: I am not condemning or condoning GLP-1 use. Many people genuinely need these medications medically and I fully support that. Others simply choose to use them for weight loss, and that is their decision as well. This is simply an open opinion and conversation around the topic.

There’s probably no medication that has shifted modern weight loss conversations more recently than GLP-1 medications like:

  • Ozempic
  • Wegovy
  • Mounjaro
  • Zepbound

Whether people like it or not, they’ve already changed the fitness and health industry significantly.

Because for the first time, a lot of people struggling with:

  • appetite control
  • food noise
  • overeating
  • insulin resistance
  • obesity

…suddenly experienced what felt like a completely different relationship with hunger.

That’s powerful.

And I think people who have never struggled with constant hunger or food fixation sometimes underestimate how mentally exhausting that can be long term for others.

Now obviously, the rise in popularity also created controversy.

Some people view GLP-1s as:

  • life-changing medical tools
  • obesity treatment
  • metabolic support

Others view them as:

  • shortcuts
  • cosmetic weight loss
  • social media trends
  • unsustainable dependency

Realistically, the conversation is probably more complicated than either extreme.

Because yes, these medications can absolutely provide real benefits.

Potential benefits can include:

  • significant weight loss
  • improved blood sugar control
  • appetite regulation
  • reduced food cravings
  • improved metabolic health markers
  • reduced obesity-related health risks

And for some people, that can genuinely improve quality of life tremendously.

At the same time, social media has also distorted the conversation around them heavily.

People now see:

  • dramatic transformations
  • rapid weight loss
  • celebrity rumors
  • unrealistic expectations

…without always understanding the full picture.

GLP-1s are still medications.

And like any medication, there are risks and side effects.

Potential concerns can include:

  • nausea
  • digestive issues
  • muscle loss during rapid weight loss
  • fatigue
  • rebound weight gain if habits never improve
  • nutritional deficiencies from under-eating
  • potential declines in muscle and bone health if weight loss becomes aggressive without proper nutrition and resistance training
  • long-term unknowns we’re still learning about

One thing I think also gets overlooked is this:

Weight loss alone does not automatically create health.

If someone loses weight but:

  • never builds muscle
  • never improves conditioning
  • never improves nutrition quality
  • never becomes more active
  • never develops sustainable habits

…there are still important health conversations worth having long term.

At the same time, I also think fitness culture sometimes lacks empathy around this topic.

Not everybody starts from the same place physically, mentally, hormonally, or metabolically.

For some people, GLP-1 medications genuinely become the thing that finally helps them regain momentum and control over their health.

At Fitness 1440 Fredericksburg, what I encourage people to focus on; regardless of whether they use GLP-1s or not; is building habits that support long-term quality of life:

  • resistance training
  • movement
  • hydration
  • nutrition awareness
  • recovery
  • muscle preservation
  • consistency

Because medications may assist the process.

But long-term health still usually depends on the habits built around them.
