The Standard Didn’t Change

As I wrote “the standard is the standard” at Fitness 1440 Fredericksburg… I walked by a mirror.

And it caught up to me.

Work. Fatherhood. Stress. Life.

Somewhere in the middle of managing everything else, I stopped holding myself to the same standard I expect out of others.

I’ve put on about 20 pounds.

Strength has dropped.

Conditioning isn’t where it should be.

My left quad is partially torn.

I deal with sciatica nerve pain that sometimes makes it hard to even stand upright normally.

My shoulder is damaged.

My neck has nerve damage.

Excuses… or reasons.

Truthfully; both exist.

Last year, I won the Get Fit Challenge at Start2Finish Nutrition.

But this time isn’t about a challenge.

Or a prize.

Or proving I can suffer for six weeks.

It’s about rebuilding discipline for myself again.

Because life happens.

Injuries happen.

Fatigue happens.

But none of it changes the standard.

It only explains the distance between where you are and where you know you’re capable of being.

So today at Fitness 1440 Fredericksburg wasn’t about perfection.

It was about showing up again.

Shaking off rust.

Getting uncomfortable.

Breathing hard again.

Starting again.

Because the standard didn’t change.

I did.

And now it’s on me to close that gap.

So for the next 8 weeks, I’m documenting the process publicly.

The weight loss.

The conditioning.

The rebuilding.

The setbacks.

The consistency.

The days I don’t feel like doing it.

All of it.

Not for sympathy.

Not for motivation posts.

Not to pretend perfection.

Accountability.

Because it’s easy to talk about standards when you feel good.

The real test is whether you still honor them when you don’t.

The standard is the standard.

Define yours.

And stop negotiating it.
