Water is one of those things most of us know we should probably be better about, but it is easy to forget until we are already thirsty.
When it comes to fitness, hydration gets talked about a lot, but usually only in the context of sweating during a workout. In reality, it affects how we feel throughout the entire day from energy, and focus to digestion and how well we handle exercise.
Hydration Starts Before the Gym
A lot of people do not really think about drinking water until they are already at the gym. By then, they may already be trying to catch up.
It helps to think of hydration as something that happens all day instead of something you only focus on during a workout. Keeping a bottle nearby, taking a few drinks with meals, or just remembering to drink a little more often can make a difference.
That can be especially useful once the weather cools down, because we may not feel as thirsty as we do during the summer.
Sometimes That Sluggish Feeling Is Just That
We all have those afternoons where energy suddenly disappears.
- Sometimes it is work.
- Sometimes it is lack of sleep.
- Sometimes it is simply not drinking enough throughout the day.
Being even a little dehydrated can leave you feeling more tired and less focused, which can make the idea of working out feel harder before you even get started.
A little more water is not going to fix everything, but it can help more than people realize.
Do You Always Need Electrolytes?
Not necessarily.
Electrolyte drinks can be useful if you are sweating a lot, training for a long time, or exercising in hotter conditions. For a normal workout, plain water is often enough.
Like most things in fitness, it really depends on what you are doing and how your body feels.
One of the Easiest Habits to Improve
Hydration is not exciting, and it is definitely not complicated. That is probably why it gets overlooked.
But keeping up with it can make the rest of your routine feel a little easier. Better energy, better focus, and feeling more prepared for your workout are all small wins that add up.
Sometimes improving your fitness starts with something as simple as taking a few more drinks of water during the day.
Whether it be hydrating properly, working out, or some other realm of fitness, just remember…
