Training To Learn

When people think about personal training, they usually think about the client learning something
new. What often gets overlooked is how much trainers learn from their clients as well.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a trainer is watching someone discover what they are truly capable of. Every client brings a different story, a different challenge, and a different goal. As
trainers, we help guide the process, but we also learn from the determination, consistency, and
growth we see along the way.

One client who immediately comes to mind is Natalie. From the very beginning, she came in with a
clear goal and, more importantly, the drive to make a lasting change in her life. As trainers, we can
provide workouts, encouragement, and accountability, but nobody can make that decision for you.
The desire to improve has to come from within.

Three Things to Prepare For Success

1. Proper Mindset Is Key

• Be willing to challenge yourself.
• Understand that growth can be uncomfortable.
• Learn to work through fear and self-doubt.
• Focus on consistency rather than perfection.

The people who achieve their goals aren’t always the strongest or most experienced. They’re usually the ones who keep showing up.

2. Understand Your Starting Point

• Speak with your medical provider when appropriate.
• Understand any injuries or health concerns.
• Share important information with your trainer.
• Set realistic goals based on where you are today.

Having a solid starting point allows both you and your trainer to create a safer and more effective
plan.

3. Move With Confidence

• Don’t wait for the perfect time to start.
• Don’t worry about knowing everything on day one.
• Focus on taking the next step.
• Trust the process.

If you spend too much time standing still wondering what to do, that’s a missed opportunity to
improve.

Learning Goes Both Ways

Personal training is a skill-based process that develops over time, just like fitness itself. Nobody
walks into a gym knowing everything. We’ve all been beginners at some point.
That’s why I enjoy working with people from every stage of their fitness journey—from first-time gym members to experienced lifters looking for a new challenge.

When I look at Natalie’s progress after just a few weeks of training, it’s hard to believe she hasn’t
been doing this for years. Her confidence has grown, her strength has improved, and her
commitment continues to inspire me as a trainer.

Moments like that remind me why I love what I do. Yes, my clients learn from me — but every day, I learn from them too.
